Reverse Phase TLC...

Has anyone ever had success with reverse phase TLC plates (eg C8 or C18)? Regardless of the type of molecule (mainly the usual nitrogen containing pharmaceuticals, but sometimes nitrogen containing oligosugars), or solvent system (straight H2O/MeCN or buffered systems) I get crazy splurges instead of defined spots, even if the material runs fine on reverse phase HPLC. My RP TLCs would be fine as an art project, but not as a swift way of determining reaction results!

Any tips? My lab buys these things in but no one there seems to have been able to tame them. Some kind of trick (like pre-treating) involved?
