Lab Rats

So, world-wide Acetonitrile shortage. I got to spend today calling every vendor I could think of to see if anyone could help my thirsty HPLC. Some places are so far behind they won't even sell it on backorder.

Anyone know how that happened? One sales rep told me a couple of stories, but she had no idea how true they were.

Tell me about it. When my supervisor told me, I just kind of stared at her in confusion. Of course, we were out of methanol for a while, too!

I'd imagine methanol is significantly easier to make, fortunately.

Methanol is made on purpose.
You place an order, some producer will make it for you.
Aceto is byproduct of acrylonitrile producer.
If producer makes 3 lb of aceto for you, where will they sell the 97 lb of acrylo?
